How Ange Postecoglou has started his second season as Tottenham manager

So it's no secret that Ange plays an attacking style of football and a very exciting brand of football at the same time. Whenever i watch Tottenham play under Ange there's always goals, maybe one or two rare occasions where there hasn't been however the majority of the time there is and that's all to do with the way Ange sets up his team to play. Whilst they control the majority of every game, a lot of chances come and when your not clinical and are sloppy in possession unfortunately at this level you get punished and goals go the other way, which games then end in a draw or a defeat as we have seen early on this season. Fans get frustrated as one week their team goes out and beats a team 4-0 as we saw against Everton and the next week they have a lot of the ball again, however can't find the back of the net and get punished as we saw at Newcastle last weekend.

What is Ange ball?

In a simple explanation Ange ball is playing out from the back. What this means is instead of hoofing the ball 70,80 yards up the pitch it's just playing the ball around the back line and the midfield. The reason some managers do this is to get the opposition tired and eventually they will press which allows space further up the pitch and if the right pass is played at the right time there is a good opportunity for an attack and potentially a goal to come from it.

How does Ange set up his team?

Ange plays a 4-3-3, however normally this is sort of changed to a 3-4-3 throughout the game. What i mean by this is that the keeper (Guglielmo Vicario) acts as a defender in terms of playing it out the back. This allows more players to move further up the pitch as he is an option to pass to. These photos above show you how Ange Postecoglou sets his team up to play. When Vicario does have the ball he normally has 3 good options. Play it left to Mick Van de Ven, Play it right to Christian Romero or play it in the middle to whoever is playing Cdm at the time for example Yves Bissouma. The player dropping deep to receive the ball normally has one or 2 players marking them so they have to play a quick pass to one of the 2 centre backs or they could go a bit risky and try and let the ball run across them and get out of danger like that .If they manage to turn them or let it run across them then they can get a good attack going however if the player attempts to turn them and they lose the ball then this creates a brilliant chance for the opposition which if they capatalise on they score. This is one of many ways Spurs can concede from playing it out from the back. Other ways of conceding whilst playing it out from the back includes sloppy passes, taking to long on the ball or giving away possession cheaply. All simple mistakes that are easy to avoid. Some of the benefits of playing out from the back are keeping custody of the ball, controlling the game and creating chances and depending or not they can take them they will win or lose games. Two examples already this season where we haven't taken chances are against Newcastle and Leicester. On the other hand we did take our chances against Everton which then resulted in a 4-0 win. So you can see the advantages and the disadvantages of playing Ange ball.

That summary of how Ange sets up his team concludes this blog and if you did like the blog please leave a like and a comment.

A very good analysis of how spurs are set up. Does this mean that we will only do well against lesser teams? All prem teams know our plan and know how to counter it, does this mean that Ange Ball won't work?
